Abstract
"Children have the right to express their views on all matters that concern them and have that view taken seriously." (Article 12, United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.)
Based on the experience of enabling young people with disabilities to participate in decision making in their schools, this symposium will explore:
- how young people with disabilities benefit from participating in
decision making in the education system.
- how schools benefit from having
pupil participation in decision making.
- the barriers and difficulties
that young people face if they wish to participate in decision making.
-
different models to enable young people to participate in decision making.
The symposium will be co-facilitated by workers from the PACT Project of The Children's Society and young people who have worked with the project to increase their involvement within their schools. The PACT workers have experience of working in partnership with special schools in the York and Bradford areas in order to set up or improve models of pupil participation.
"Pupils have a voice - an important one which must be heard if facilities for, and understanding of, citizens with specials needs are to improve." (Class Teacher)
