Career Information for School Leavers with Multiple and Complex Disabilities

Orla Bateson - MENCAP, UK

Abstract

Introduction The V.O.T.E. project, (Vocational Opportunities in Training for Employment) in partnership with Mencap, SEELB and the Ulster Community and Hospital Trust, aims to increase opportunities for school leavers with complex and multiple disabilities to participate in work activities. However, many of the young people in the project have a limited understanding of work. The V.OT.E. project aims to increase the school leavers understanding of the world of work.

Method
A study was carried out with the young people to find out what they wanted to know about work. From this, in partnership with Queens University, a CD ROM was developed with stories, pictures and voice-over. People with learning disabilities and the teachers advised the project on the format of the programme.

Results
It is hoped that most of the school leavers will be able to use this CD ROM with minimal support from the teacher.

Conclusions
It is important to inform school leavers with severe learning disabilities of their options after school in an accessible format.
