Abstract
Many people with disabilities in Zimbabwe did not have the opportunity to go through formal education especially higher education. The current worldwide spread of distance and open learning has seen many such colleges get established in Southern Africa. Several international Open and Distance Learning universities have centres in Zimbabwe. Recently the Government of Zimbabwe established the Zimbabwe Open University as a key player in this arena in the country.
Many people with disabilities in Zimbabwe want to participate in distance and open learning programmes. A few are already enrolled and they have special educational needs that have to be met in the distance and open learning systems. Using case studies, this paper explores and analyses the current position of disabilities and distance, and open learning in Zimbabwe and makes recommendations for improvements.
