A Pilot Project for Students with Specific Learning Disabilities in Post- Secondary Education

Barry Cull - Conestoga College, Canada

Abstract

The Learning Opportunities Project at Conestoga College has provided a unique opportunity to support the learning objectives of students who have been assessed as having a specific learning disability. The project provides students with access to: a) a course in study strategies for learning disabled students, b) the preparation of a Personal Learning Profile, c) the development of a Self-Advocacy Plan, d) hands-on learning methods, e) adaptive technology and f) career and employment planning. This project is a new initiative of the Ministry of Colleges and Universities for the Province of Ontario. It is hoped that a best practices model will emerge that will inform future decisions about how to ensure post-secondary education success for students who have typically had difficulty succeeding at this level. The project is in its second year and we are learning about ways to accommodate these students, how to provide instruction based on learning needs, and how to manage an effective support system.
