Non-Aversive and Rapid Control Over Extreme Behaviour for Students in Mainstream School Settings

Abstract

Students whose aggressive behaviour threatens the well-being and safety of others, provide difficulties for staff in mainstream school settings. In this session the role of behaviour intervention plans is discussed in relation to the prevention and management of extreme behaviour. Team involvement is an essential component for effective preparation and implementation of these plans. Emphasis is on preventative strategies so that incidents don't occur in the first place, but staff also need to know how to intervene when the safety of others is being threatened. Case examples of children with disabilities demonstrate the use of non-aversive, safe and rapid management over extreme behaviour and these will be linked back to the importance of a comprehensive approach for long term behaviour change.
