Abstract
Growing up with a disability usually means challenges greater than the expected growing pains. The people around you may not have an understanding of, or an identification with, issues of disability. This presentation looks at the setting up, by young adults with disabilities, of different initiatives to promote leadership, self esteem, and positive role models for youth with disabilities. It explores the role of the family and society, but focuses particularly on the role other young adults with disabilities can play, and how professionals in educational institutions and disability support services can expand their current roles
