Abstract
In this session I will present the results of my doctoral research on effective practice in behaviour support. Through a series of case studies of behaviour support services, I have explored the following questions: What theoretical models and principles inform the work of effective practitioners? What do practitioners do, and for what purposes? Is there a link between theory and practice? What skills and knowledge do practitioners need, and how are these developed and maintained? These questions are not addressed by the research literature, and this gap is reflected in the apparent chaos in the field. Peggy made an introductory presentation to the ISEC conference in 1994, and is now pleased to present her final results.
