Abstract
We are currently in an era where policies for SEN are becoming an increasing requirement at school, local authority and government level. But what is the purpose of these policies and who are they for? More fundamentally, who owns these policies and what impact do they have?
This seminar/symposium will look at issues in the development of SEN policy at a number of levels. The first part will focus on whole school policy development and will attempt to highlight ways in which this can be linked to day-to-day practice. This will be followed by a look at SEN policy development at the local authority level, with examples of approaches that encourage commitment from a wide range of stakeholders. The final element will describe how NASEN (the National Association for Special Education Needs) is developing its policies, using its recent policy on Inclusion as a case for discussion. Reference will be made to NASEN's current approach to dissemination and some of the ways in which NASEN policies are currently being used.
A range of NASEN policy documents will be available for inspection.
