Abstract

During the past six years a severely handicapped boy attended a regular school along with his peers in the neighbourhood. The boy is non verbal and has no control of his movements. The paper will describe how the school has met the challenge by offering him full participation in the class during the last six years. The issues involved are: - co-operation with parents - preparation before schooling - staff development and co-operation among staff - attitude of school authorities - development and adaptation of teaching strategies - development methods with regard to social integration.

The two last issues have been the most challenging ones as they have dealt with everyday classroom life and success in learning and social bonding. The EC and the EEC community have recognised this project as being outstanding.
