Abstract
How can ordinary local people be persuaded that they have skills and knowledge that can help disabled children? How can government officials be convinced that every department, not only the health department, has a responsibility towards disabled children? This flexible, problem-solving approach, which takes existing local good practice as a starting point for discussion, has consistently achieved just that.
'including disabled people' [working title] is a set of practical, non-technical training materials, which were developed during the author's experience working for Save the Children/UK in Viet Nam. The main goal of this approach is to improve the participation of disabled children in the life of the family and community. The training comprises a series of practical, problem-solving activities which help participants to identify the obstacles to participation for disabled children, and ways of addressing those obstacles, drawing on local resources. Through this process, the importance of a holistic approach = to addressing the issues facing disabled children becomes clear.
This workshop will provide an overview of the materials, with a practical demonstration of selected activities. This will be followed by discussion, including how the materials have been used, and resulting benefits, further potential uses, and the materials' strengths and limitations.
