Designing and Implementing an Effective Behavioural Support Plan

Mark W. Kandel - Marywood University, USA

Abstract

The objective of this presentation is to take an in-depth look at a five-step process for designing a positive behavioural support plan for students with challenging behaviours.

The steps include:
1) conducting a functional assessment;
2) developing a hypothesis statement concerning the function of the behaviour;
3) designing and implementing the behavioural support plan;
4) evaluating the plan, and;
5) modifying the support plan as needed.

In addition to an overview of the five step process, participants will work in teams to develop a Behavioural Supp Plan from a case study. The document used by many districts across Pennsylvania will be shared with the participants.

Using the case study, the participants will develop:
1) antecedent and setting event strategies;
2) alternative skills be taught to the student;
3) instructional consequence strategies (how to reinforce identified alternative skills);
4) reduction oriented consequence strategies (what to do when behaviours occur including the Crisis Management plan);
5) long term prevention strategies (permanent adaptations and quality of life enhancement), and;
6) supports for team members.

Support teams working with children who demonstrate challenging behaviours are encouraged to use this five step process. Use of this planning process should be part of the student's Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) as appropriate. This mini-workshop will allow participants the opportunity to develop a positive behaviour support plan based on information they have analysed and interpreted from a case study.
