Living with Learning Disabilities: Sometimes I Wish I were Stupid

Philip A McBrayer - Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong

Abstract

This paper examines the issue of inclusion of children with learning disabilities from a consumer's perspective. The paper is autobiographical in nature deals with the negative experiences of the author as a learning disabled child in an inclusive educational setting. It contains practical suggestions to parents and teachers on dealing with learning disabilities and insight on what it feels like to be a learning disabled child. It also attempts to provide a counterpoint to the theoretical calls for inclusive education by asking educational professionals to look at the needs of the individual child rather than adhering to a particular theory of education.
