Relevant Education for Disabled Children in Viet Nam

Tran Thi Nhieu - Save the Children Fund UK in Viet Nam

Abstract

Too late for Duong!! He was born poor. He had cerebral palsy when he was 3 years old. He did not go to a rehabilitation centre because it was far from his family. His disability worsens day by day . He looks like a frog when he was lying. He spends all his time on a divan.

When Duong was 15 years old, his family was involved in CBR project of Save the Children Fund/UK. Volunteers and his parents recognize that although he can not stand up, and communicate, he is very bright, he is facing with many obstacles such as social, education and health issue. His movement would be improved if he has speech and physical therapy. He wants to go to school, but his commune has neither special nor inclusive education programme for disabled children.

How can we support him? - A volunteer and his parents supported him to integrate in the society, First, they were teaching him at home, After 3 months, Duong can read newspapers with big letters. Now he is creating some poems with more excitement and confidence.

Duong is a typical example of the need for relevant education for disabled children.

If a disabled child cannot go to school then the school should reach him.
