Strategies Towards Ameliorating the Barriers to Relevant Education of the Visually Handicapped in Nigeria

Marcus Abayomi Osinuga - N.C.E. Teacher Education, Oyo, Nigeria

Abstract

The unavailability of any reliable breakdown of the handicapped population, the inadequacy of any distinct law enforcing the right of the disabled, the inadequacy of the dissemination of the changing trends in the whole process due to improved scientific approaches being developed from time to time and the changing nature of the learned society, and disjointed educational provision among the interdisciplinary professionals create barriers to the development of adequate special educational practice in Nigeria. With about 120,000 handicapped persons, the special educational provisions and services delivery have not increased for the past decade. All these are barriers towards development. This paper ruminates over some avoidable barriers and highlights strategies for better development in the approach towards the year 2000.
