Inclusion: A Human Rights Issue: The Voice of the Oppressed

Richard Rieser - Alliance for Inclusive Education, UK

Abstract

The theme of the symposium will be that the whole concept of 'Special Educational Needs' is an oppressive categorisation based on a history of segregation motivated by Eugenicist thinking. Inevitably this history conditions the response of education and medical professionals in responding to disabled children and young people and their needs.

The thinking of the Disabled People's Movement is central to develop inclusive education. The 'Social Model' approach will be contrasted to the 'Medical Model' approach by disabled teachers and trainers.

This will be followed by members of young and powerful - disabled and non-disabled - young people committed to inclusion, making a presentation.

Then, Parents for Inclusion will explain how predominant 'SEN and Medical Model' thinking disempowers them and how they have learned to become allies to their disabled children in their struggle for full inclusion.

The symposium will end with a panel discussion.
