Abstract
The lack of school discipline and the increase in school violence have been identified by educators and the general public as two of the most persistent and alarming issues facing our public schools. The challenge of managing "generic" troubling behaviour in schools is often exacerbated by the growing presence of students identified as having emotional and behavioural disorders, attention difficulties, and other disabilities, a trend that is likely to continue as we pursue more inclusive service delivery alternatives. Our comprehensive school-wide discipline project, Up To PAR, is designed to (a) deliver on-site, school-based training in a process-based model that promotes the consistent application of positive behaviour management techniques in inclusive school environments; (b) provide an on-going, user-friendly, technologically enhanced system of support for the maintenance of the management procedures; and (c) disseminate our procedures and outcomes to a broad segment of the educational community. In this presentation, we will describe our model, highlight how our project schools have developed comprehensive plans for all students, and present outcome data collected during our multi-year observations. We will also demonstrate several of the technological enhancements (e.g. video conferencing, websites, etc.) used by project staff to help sustain positive outcomes.
