Secondary Inclusion Complexities

Garnett J Smith - University of Hawaii, USA

Contributions from: Patricia Edelen-Smith - USA, Stanley Scarpati - USA, Alexander DeNoble - USA, Kathleen DeNoble - USA.

Abstract:

The panel members for this symposium will discuss the successes and difficulties they have encountered within and across their long term efforts to create and empirically evaluate programs, procedures and practices that install, and sustain inclusive general, vocational and special education services and supports for students with mild cognitive disabilities at the secondary school level.

Smith and Edelen-Smith will provide a summary of three promising University of Hawaii programs that produce dually trained secondary teachers in both subject area content and special education at the pre-service level. Kathleen DeNoble and Alex DeNoble will expand upon this dual secondary and special education theme from the practitioner level. They will present the work they have been doing within the Hudson County Schools of Technology to create and sustain exemplary vocational and special education secondary programs for students with special needs. Following the overview of these two training programs, the panel members will discuss the research-to-practice implications their work offers to researchers and practitioners in secondary general, vocational, and special education.
