Create A Flexible Service Delivery Model

Leslie Tsusaki - School District 30, Illinois, USA

Abstract

In Illinois my school district is a state pilot site for implementing the Flexible Service Delivery system as an alternative to our traditional special education service delivery model. In this model, problem solving teams serve as the basis for providing services to all students who are at-risk for school failure or experiencing some level of difficulty at school. This collaborative approach addresses the concerns of parents, principals and teachers who are frustrated by the lack of resources and services available to those students who do not qualify for special education. This unified model presumes that all children can learn and that all staff members are potential resources. This merging of roles and creative utilisation of resources allows the school to more effectively meet the needs of all students.

Integral components of a Flex system include problem solving teams, parent involvement, functional assessment, outcome oriented interventions, and ongoing progress monitoring which provides information on the effectiveness of intervention plans and the need for future or ongoing service.

This workshop will examine how to get started with a Flex system by portraying my experiences developing a system within my schools.
