Abstract
This paper discusses the need for a new direction in the treatment of the handicapped in Nigeria. It observes that despite the Federal Government of Nigeria Policy (1981) regarding the education of the handicapped much still remains to be done to equalize educational opportunities to all Nigerian children irrespective of their "real or imagined disabilities". The paper examines the issues involving education equalisation, need for functional education for the handicapped in the school systems teacher preparation for the handicapped as well as societal attitude towards the handicapped. In the interim this paper suggests a more vigorous governmental and non-governmental intervention in the struggle to equalize educational opportunities for the handicapped members of the society.
