Abstract
Special education in Flanders is organised in 8 types of special schools. In each of these types, education is adapted to the special needs of a certain group of students. Although this system has contributed to the high degree of specialisation and expertise in special education, it has been criticised on practical as well as on theoretical grounds. In this paper we present the results of an empirical study carried out for the department of education of the Flemish government, about the perspective of parents on problems of the current typology in special education. Through group discussions with parents who have a child in special education, we explore the problems that these parents experience in the current educational system. Hereby, we focus on the adaptation of the education to the specific educational needs of their children and look for explanatory factors and solutions of problems in that domain. The research data will be qualitatively analysed.
