Abstract
A multi-sensory activity workshop for primary teachers and others involved in the implementation of the literacy strategy. The implementation of the Literacy Hour, and in particular the 'whole class' teaching elements has provided new learning opportunities for dyslexic pupils. It has also brought new challenges and difficulties for many of them. For many years teachers and others involved in the specialist teaching of dyslexic pupils have advocated the use of multi-sensory teaching methods. The aim of this type of teaching is to enable pupils and teachers to identify the most effective learning mode: visual, auditory or kinaesthetic. Teaching may then be planned to make full use of the pupil's strengths, whilst at the same time improving their weaker learning modalities.
This practical workshop aims to give teachers experience of multi-sensory learning. They will look at, hear, feel and discuss a variety of activities, and hopefully have fun at the same time. This will give them ideas for teaching strategies that will enable the dyslexic learner to benefit from both the whole class teaching and the group work within the Literacy Hour framework. These methods will also enhance the learning of many if not all of the other pupils in a class.
