Abstract
This presentation describes the Family, Infant and Preschool Program that uses a family-centred, evidence-based model. The model embraces the use of natural learning opportunities, parenting supports, and family and community resources to support the development of young children birth to eight years in everyday settings. This program has successfully worked with young children and their families since 1972. The mission of the program is to promote the growth and development of young children by supporting and strengthening families and building caring, responsive communities. Based on the belief that all families benefit from support, the program can be accessed by families of children who are typically developing and those with disabilities or at high risk. The multiple funding streams provide an adequate resource base to support access for all young children and their families to a variety of program activities. The resources and supports include activities such as, high risk intervention, play groups, family events, outreach to Non-English speaking families, specialized therapies.
In order to engage in help giving that is effective, the program staff develop partnerships with children, parents, family and community members. These partnerships are based on mutual respect, trust and compassion and are aimed at increasing positive outcomes. Supports and resources that are planned with the family using family-centred and evidence-based practices are carried out in conjunction with the family and other community providers. By creating opportunities that promote the competence of the family and individual family members the program staff promote family growth and well-being which is shown to result in positive outcomes for the child.
