A Struggle for Inclusive Education in the North of Ireland

Abstract

This workshop will present the case for a clear and unequivocal message about human rights, from those who advocate Inclusive Education. For too long professionals have sought to justify why disabled people should participate in ordinary school experiences, rather than fundamentally challenge the denial of this basic right. A right to be apart of an ordinary school has been denied to David McKibben in the North of Ireland. David and his family have taken on the East Belfast Education Board to fight for David's right to attend his local mainstream high school. After being rejected by the Belfast Board David and his family assumed they would get a fair hearing at the so-called, Independent Special Needs Tribunals, only to experience a further denial of his rights to attend his local school. We will argue that the tribunal system and the existing UK education legislation fundamentally undermine the human rights of disabled children and has to be changed.
